With a comfortable advantage over 7 other titles including “UX Redesign for Course Restore” and “Advanced Grading for Workshop” (second and third, with over 20,000 votes each), the project “Fix analytical tools for random quiz questions for consistency across use cases” has been voted as the Moodle Users Association’s (MUA) focus of the 2017 July-December Project Development Cycle. It earned 32,560 votes and it is estimated to cost $20,000 AUD to develop. MUA will provide the funding for Moodle HQ to take it on. The idea was originally developed and championed by Glenn Pillsbury and Andrew Roderick, Moodlers from California State. Pillsbury leads the University’s “Stanislaus” Moodle LMS, while Roderick leads the “Moodle Common Interest Group” and directs the Technology Services in Academic Technology at San Francisco State University.

The project overview reads:

Redesign, simplify, and make consistent how instructors see response statistics for quiz questions deployed from a randomized pool. Currently, the ability to view details in quizzes with more than nine random questions is undocumented and unintuitive. This project aims to make the layout and navigation of the statistics page consistent and clear regardless of the number of random questions. Fixing this problem would have a positive impact on the pedagogical effectiveness and overall attractiveness of Moodle.”

It seems the project found a sweet spot of feasibility and support from users, many of which had previously voiced their issues about the way Moodle handles randomized quizzes and displays student performance and behavior data. As they successfully argued, what appears to be “purely technical” complications have in fact “significant pedagogical” consequences. Not the least of which is the support for better assessment and anti-cheating strategies.
