Moodle 3.3 – the latest breed of the world’s most popular open source LMS – Moodle, boasts of many exciting new features and improvements. The new features in Moodle 3.3 will help Moodle to keep up its numero uno place in the education market. Today, we are going to discuss about the new “Improved Dashboard” which came along with Moodle 3.3 courtesy Moodle User’s Association.
My Course Dashboard was chosen by the MUA members in Jan-July 2016 development cycle based on the number of votes it has received. The new improved dashboard allows you to check course progress, upcoming activities and gradeable activities. The students will be able to check their course progress and view upcoming deadlines. The teachers will also see a similar dashboard and alerted at a glance about the assignments which needs grading.
But how will you make full use of the new improved dashboard page as a teacher?
In order to maximize the usage of the new improved dashboard page, you need to understand how it will be displayed to your students and teachers. What are the changes teachers need to make to optimize its usage? Now, let’s start with What your students will see on the new course dashboard page:
The new improved course overview is displayed on a student’s dashboard and displays two tabs: Timeline and Courses. The timeline tab will display the due activities based on the due date or by course name.
It can be sorted by dates or by courses. When sorted by dates, sections for Recently overdue (if applicable), Today, Next 7 days, and Next 30 days display.
When the timeline tab is sorted by the courses then the students see the activities filtered by course, with a percentage completion icon. This percentage shows how many of the activities with activity completion settings have been completed so far by the student.
The Courses tab displays the current, future or past courses for the student. It displays three different tabs: In Progress, Future & Past along with the percentage of the course completion. To allow the students to see their course progress, you need to make sure that Activity completion settings are turned On. Otherwise, the course completion percentage will not be shown to the students.
What the teachers will see on the dashboard:
The teachers will also see a similar dashboard to that of a student. Additionally, they will see the assignments which needs to be graded along with the number of submissions for the assignment. The teacher can directly click the Grade link to go directly to the grading screen.
How to add activities on the dashboard page?
For activities to display on the Course overview, you as a teacher must set the deadlines for completion. For resources (such as Pages or Books) the ‘Expect completed by’ date must be set in the activity completion settings of the resource. To display forums, the ‘Expect completed by’ date must be set in the forum activity completion settings.
If you would like to see the assignments for grading as a teacher, you need to set the “Grade By” date in the assignment settings. (This is also a new feature in Moodle 3.3).
