How To Customize A Personal And Unique Moodle Experience? The Answer Is 'Essential'

“Essential”, Moodle Theme extraordinaire, has received their January 2017 update right on schedule. Gareth Barnard has took on the task to maintain the unmatched “Moodleverse” favorite.

The “Essential” offer reads like one of those too-good-to-be-true pitches:

  • Beatiful and clean, based on CSS Grids and the Bootstrap Framework.
  • Fast, as it replaces images with Font Awesome icons whenever possible.
  • Customizable from head to toes (should I say, from header to footer).
  • Social Media-ready, with icons customizable from admin settings.
  • And Free!

Install “Essential” by signing in on moodle.org linked to your Moodle site administration, and heading to the plugin version page. Choose your version and press “Install now“.  It can also be done manually by pressing “Download” to get the theme’s package, and uploading it to your Moodle Administration > Site administration > Plugins > Install plugins drop zone. To activate it, stay on Site Administration, then head to Appearance > Themes > Theme Selector. Make sure to “clear theme cache” before selecting Essential.

Small fixes make up the bulk of Jan’s update, most notably multi-language filter for the Slider Title and Course Category sections.

By the time of this publication, builds compatible for all active Moodle versions (2.9, 3.0 and 3.1) should be available. Barnard has left us in a bit of a suspense regarding compatibility of “Essential” with Moodle 3.2.
