Below are two short extracts from the article above.

Facial recognition, a gateway to distance learning

The distance education programs are on the rise. Indeed, almost all North American and European universities now offer distance masters. Whether for financial reasons, administrative (for foreign students who have administrative, apprentices or workers in training working in another city) or simply for more flexibility (the schedules are less constrained),
the number of students wishing to enroll in such programs is increasing.

One of the important issues related to distance education students is authentication and monitoring. Among the various methods of authentication, facial recognition using biometrics is one that corroborate and certify user identities by focusing on the physiological characteristics of the face. This technology in particular to verify the identity of students while they follow their courses online. Moreover, some platforms may detect in real time whether any other software or program is active on the computer and if the student is leaving suspicious behavior suggest that he did something else at the same time or if he cheats review.

Integration of facial recognition on Moodle

Many articles deal with the integration of facial recognition on Moodle. The use of this technology as Moodle authentication plugin (allowing registered users to connect to the platform by simply using their face via webcam) is part of the suggested proposals.

The connection is therefore would perform as such:

  • webcam takes a picture of the user and stores it on the server
  • the file is scanned for a match
  • If there is a match in the database is that the user exists and is therefore seeking his record
  • Otherwise, the user is redirected to the login page with traditional login and password.

At the University of Madrid Technical Sciences (UDIMA) is to avoid cases of fraud that facial recognition was submitted on Moodle. In fact, facial authentication has been integrated into online courses on the school’s Moodle as students scoring system. A survey was then conducted with students who used the tool and this survey produced high satisfaction scores.
