HQ Moodler Gareth J. Barnard has recently announced the update on a forum discussion.
He is proud to announce that Essential has reached stability for Moodle 3.1. Dozens of fixes join the release, also for Moodle 3.0 and 2.9. I find the following notable:
- Login page background image.
- Extra URL colors for CSS stripes.
- Accessibility patches.
From the start Essential has been an effort to push the envelope in what a theme can do in terms of CSS and Bootstrap 2. Grids, and now Flexbox, are distinctive features of Essential, a theme behind the idea of “[making] make the site look as little like Moodle as possible”. It is one of the many possible reasons why Essential belongs to the exclusive over 10k downloadsplugin club.
Barnard also warns us that his maintenance cycle might change once Moodle 3.2 is upon us. Moodle 3.2’s default theme will move from Bootstrap 2 to 4. We will be following how Essential and the other popular Moodle themes adjust to November’s new state of affairs.
Barnard would also like to thank Gemma Lesterhuis, Nadav Kavalerchik for contributions, and to honor the memory of Ray Towell.
